How to Break Through the Ceiling of Complexity: 3 Tips for Business Leaders

Does it suddenly seems difficult to do business? Can’t keep up with your inbox, customer demands, or people issues? You’re seeing the same challenges crop up over and over again, and you just can’t seem to solve them effectively. It doesn’t matter how much extra time and effort you put in; it still doesn’t seem to make a difference.

Chances are, you’ve ‘Hit the Ceiling’.

Business growth happens in stages. And as we grow, we add different processes, systems, and people along the way. In themselves, they are all vital to helping us grow a business, but at certain points, they can start to clash and work against each other. This is the point where we ‘Hit the Ceiling of Complexity.’ It’s arguably an inevitable part of growth—not something we’ve done wrong as business leaders, but something that, if we recognise the signs, we could plan for and work through more quickly and easily when it crops up again.

Tribe is well-versed in helping clients navigate these complexities and bring much-needed simplicity to their businesses. Here are the top three must-dos we work through with each business to break through that ceiling and reach the blue skies above!

Spend Time on the Business, Not Just in the Business:

When your work life is extremely busy, it seems counterintuitive to stop and take time out. But this is vital. If you are constantly working head down in the detail, you’re not allowing yourself the headspace needed to focus ‘on the business’. Trying to make strategic decisions and solve big issues while you are in the day-to-day weeds is nearly impossible. So, take time each day, week, or month to step away and re-direct your attention to those big challenges and future thinking. A change of scenery is always helpful to switch your mindset and help you focus, and adding a recurring diary slot at a time that works for you will mean you’re less likely to put it off.

Stay Focused on Your Vision:

A simple and clear vision for your business is vital to helping you navigate through hitting the ceiling. Your vision should be your anchor, something that you refer to regularly to keep you on the straight and narrow. If you’ve hit the ceiling, chances are you may have gone off course with your vision or perhaps you’re not 100% clear on what it actually is. It doesn’t have to be a massively long-winded document (in fact, we think it should only be a page long) and just needs to capture the purpose and values of your business, providing the targets and goals you want to achieve over the next 1, 3, and 5 years.

Get Clear on Priorities and Stick to Them:

Once you’re clear on your business vision, you will have a clearer idea of what your priorities are. But actually executing these is easier said than done! To make your vision live and breathe in your business, you need to break those goals down into manageable chunks. Take your one-year goals from your vision and plan out what activities and projects you need to complete each quarter, week, and day. And don’t keep them to yourself— involve your team and help them see where they can contribute.
